Sharpham Road Playing Fields, Cheddar
The sun shone, the crowds flocked in and around twenty different local sports clubs put on activities to make Cheddar’s first youth sports festival a memorable day. The event fully lived up to its billing as a showcase for local youth sport with demonstrations of everything from angling to archery, tennis to tae kwon do and football to kick boxing.
Children were encouraged to try as many different activities as they could, with special festival medals awarded to those having a go at five or more. Thanks to major sponsorship from Bristol Water, Somerset Community Foundation and Cheddar Parish Council, plus support from a number of other organisations, entry to the event was free and there was no charge for trying any of the activities.
Guest sporting celebrity, Bristol City favourite Scott Murray stayed for most of the day and, as well as running some football skills sessions, showed off his abilities at table tennis and tennis, and his strength in the tug of war finale. He awarded the trophy for the best club demonstration to Cheddar ki aikido club.
The event was organised jointly by Cheddar cricket club, junior football club, rugby club and tennis club. For a list of all the clubs involved plus contact details see the clubs page. The date of the next youth festival has not yet been set. |
